Nghe An coastal area covers an area of 1423.54 km2 with a population of 1,510,830 people.

The length of Nghe An coastline is more than 82 km, there are 6 estuaries, with 45 coastal communes/wards, in which 24 communes/wards have mangrove forests. Mat Island and Ngu Island both have strategic positions in defense and play an important role in economic development.  Biodiversity in Mat Island, Ngu Island and Nghe An coastal sea is very rich.

In recent times, coastal fishing is increasing day by day. At the same time, people spontaneously convert the mangrove area to other used purposes such as aquaculture, housing construction, coastal tourism, construction of breakwaters, etc. Therefore, coastal marine biodiversity, especially mangrove biodiversity, has been significantly reduced.
